Why Swete and not Rahlfs: Rahlfs–Hanhart and the CCAT/CATSS Septuagint are distributed under terms that do not clearly allow public redistribution. Swete’s edition is in the public domain and its OGL transcription is openly licensed. It is an OCR-based transcription and still has scanning errors (e.g. stray letters, merged verses); see SOURCES.md.
Versification
The spine is King James numbering, extended with the King James Apocrypha numbering for deuterocanonical books, with extra rows for Psalm titles (verse “title”) and for Septuagint material that has no standard verse (e.g. 3 Kingdoms 2:35a–o). Each edition keeps its native reference, shown as a grey tag when it differs.
Instead of hand-written offsets, the build evaluates STEPBible’s TVTMS rules against each edition’s own verse inventory: every rule carries tests such as “Gen 32:33 is the last verse”, “Psalm 9:30 exists” or word-count comparisons, and a rule applies only when its tests are true for that edition. This one mechanism handles Hebrew-vs-English chapter splits (Luther 1912 and the Masoretic Text), the Septuagint/Vulgate Psalm numbering (Pss 9–147) and titles counted as verses, Malachi 4, Joel 3, Septuagint Jeremiah’s order, the Kingdoms books, and Daniel’s Greek additions. Greek Esther’s additions are mapped by a documented rule because Swete letters them in his own scheme. Where an edition joins two standard verses, the text appears in the first row and the next shows “↑”.
Empty cells are deliberate: the Hebrew has no Apocrypha, Luther 1912 and the KJV as used here have no Apocrypha, and the Septuagint lacks some Hebrew passages (e.g. parts of 1 Samuel 17–18).
Coverage
Known gaps
- Swete’s Ecclesiastes is not in the OGL transcription, so the Greek column is empty there.
- The Vulgate’s Tobit and Judith are Jerome’s own, differently divided recensions; their rows are aligned by number only.
- The Septuagint’s Odes, and the Old Greek (non-Theodotion) Daniel, Susanna and Bel, are kept in the standalone LXX data but not shown here.
- Swete’s transcription has OCR errors; a few verse-number defects are repaired and logged by the build.
